Electromyography
Electromyography involves using sophisticated instruments to measure how active a muscle is, both during function and during rest. If a muscle is too active during a period of "supposed" rest, muscle spasms, headaches, neck aches, and other symptoms can result.
This is an example of an electromyographic tracing of a patient with head and facial muscles in spasms on the left, and the same patient after the spasms have been resolved and the jaw supported to maintain this relaxed muscular position on the right. Dr. Hemingway and Dr. Reber use electromyography routinely to help find the most muscularly relaxed jaw position for their pain patients, or for any patient desiring extensive restorative work.
