For Referring Physicians

Referrals

In addition to receiving referrals from physicians, we also get referrals from other dentists when restoration problems are so complex that the additional training of a neuromuscular dentist is needed. We routinely get referrals from our local (and out-of-town) physicians who are seeking an additional resource for their patients who are suffering from headaches of unknown etiology. Please remember: It is important to include Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) in the differential diagnosis for any patient who is suffering from headache pain or any non-specific head and neck pain of undiagnosed etiology.

If you would like additional information on Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), we can provide you with brochures that are written specifically for medical professionals. Further, we would be happy to make arrangements for a brief telephone consult with you individually to answer specific questions that you may have regarding your own patients.

Please Remember

When referring your patient to a dentist for an evaluation for possible Temporomandibular Disorder, it is usually not sufficient just to tell your patient to "see their dentist."

Unfortunately, traditional dental education has not advanced to the point of adequately evaluating MUSCLE function and its relation to the patient's occlusion. A dentist specifically trained in neuromuscular dentistry is a must, to ensure that your patient's possible problem is appropriately evaluated. A classically trained dentist, while able to provide excellent care in traditional areas, is often not trained in the intricacies of neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. While we would encourage the patient to remain with their current dentist for traditional dental work, we would encourage you to seek out a neuromuscular dentist as an additional member of YOUR team who can help with this, often, complex aspect of your patient's problem. Referral back to the patient's regular dentist will often result in just one more provider being added to the patient's doctor-to-doctor search without an adequate solution to their problem. Your patient will appreciate the appropriate, knowledgeable referral you make.

If you are looking for a neuromuscular dentist in your area, we may be able to help. A referral slip to use for any referral you make is included below.
