Tooth-colored Fillings
In the past, teeth were most commonly repaired with amalgam (silver) fillings or gold restorations. Thanks to advances in modern dental materials and techniques, teeth can be restored with a more esthetic and natural appearance. There are different types of cosmetic fillings currently available. The type used will depend on the location of the tooth and the amount of tooth structure that needs to be repaired.

Tooth-colored Fillings

Silver amalgam fillings have been in use since the days of the Civil War. Odds are, you probably have some of these types of fillings in your mouth. Refusing to continue to use materials that are no more than "just good enough" or doing techniques "just because that is what most dentists do" is not what Drs. Hemingway and Reber are known for.
There is now NEW technology that allows a tooth to be filled with a strong chemically bonded material that can be matched to the color of your tooth. Research has shown that a tooth with a natural colored bonded filling is 90-95% as strong as a non-filled virgin tooth, A tooth restored with Silver Fillings is only 40-45% as strong as a non-filled tooth, making the tooth, not just the filling, much more susceptible to fracturing when chewing. In addition, it has long been known that the silver amalgam filling will expand over time. A medium or large filling can actually cause a tooth to crack after 8-12 years, necessitating a
crown to be placed on the tooth.
